Palm trees are usually seen as exotic and attractive and often represent vacation or paradise. With such a reputation, it is important to keep these trees looking their best. How? It is important to consider the specialized treatment palm trees require. If you want to ensure your palms flourish, hire a tree service in Las Vegas to give them the proper care they need. If you are maintaining your own palm trees, keep the following tips in mind.
Choosing a setting
If you are considering adding a palm tree to your landscape, choose the setting wisely. There are a variety of palm species, so be sure to choose one that can thrive in the Las Vegas climate. (Don’t forget to consider night temperatures.) It’s also important to know how much sunlight your species likes. Lastly, plant in the proper soil. Many palm species do well in acidic or alkaline soil. They also need good drainage.
Planting a palm
Have you chosen the perfect place for your paradise tree? As you prepare to plant, be sure to do so in the proper season. Avoid planting palm trees during dry seasons. Once you are ready to plant, dig a hole twice as wide as the diameter of the tree’s root ball. Make this hole only as deep as the root ball. Handle the root ball and the heart (the part that sprouts the leaves) with extra care. Place the tree in the hole and fill with loose soil to allow root growth.
Maintaining your tree
While palm trees can be lower maintenance than some tree species, they do require some care. Fertilize your palm tree four times per year with a fertilizer that contains two parts nitrogen, one part phosphorus and three parts potassium. For most species, water it three or four times a week, directing water into the root zone. Be sure it has proper drainage to avoid root rot. If you notice lower leaves turning yellow and brown, it is probably not getting enough water. A two-to-four-inch layer of mulch around the palm can help retain moisture, and it enriches the soil.
Trimming your fronds
Palm trees do not need the same amount of trimming that many other types of trees require. Palms naturally maintain the number of fronds they need for their health and growth. As a new frond sprouts, an old one dies. Remove only damaged or dead fronds. Only remove the frond after there is no green left.
Removing fronds too soon or removing too many will result in a lack of the nutrients the tree needs. Its fronds are the tree’s source of food. Taking away healthy fronds will slow the tree’s growth and weaken it.
You should also remove fruit stalks. Fruit stalks remove strength from the tree, offer food for pests and make messes when they drop.
